HIV continues to be a major global public health issue.
In 2016, an estimated 36.7 million people were living with HIV (including 1.8 million children) – with a global HIV prevalence of 0.8% among adults.1 2 Around 30% of these same people do not know that they have the virus.3 Since the start of the epidemic, an estimated 78 million people have become infected with HIV and 35 million people have died of AIDS-related illnesses.
Its purposes are to: First, I define "Asian Americans" as the population living in the U. who self-identify as having Asian or Pacific Islander ancestry, in whole or in part, regardless of whether they're U. Second, while there is certainly a lot of unique characteristics and differences within the diverse Asian American community, unfortunately I cannot detail the specific issues and experiences of every single Asian ethnic group.
However, a slightly more positive trend is emerging as new infections among adults are now estimated to have declined by 11% - and 16% for the general population - between 20, whereas there was only an 8% decline between 20.7 While new HIV infections among children globally have halved, from 300,000 in 2010 to 160,000 in 2016 (47%), reports indicate that there is much more that needs to be done to improve knowledge of HIV and HIV testing among adolescents and young adults.
Young women are especially at risk, with 59% of new infections among young people aged 15-24 occurring among this group.8 Moreover, despite the progress made across the 69 countries which witnessed a decline in new infections, UNAIDS warned that progress in combating viral transmission is still not happening fast enough to meet global targets.9 A closer comparison of country data shows huge discrepancies in efforts to slow the spread of new infections.
Therefore, I will say that much of what I present in Asian-Nation is based on my subjective knowledge and experiences as an immigrant, an Vietnamese American, an Asian American, and a person of color.
However, this does not mean that everything in Asian-Nation is merely my personal opinion.
